Peter G. Ellis, MD, is currently Director, Medical Oncology Network of UPMC Cancer Centers, one of the largest cancer centers in the USA serving over 36,000 patients annually. In his capacity as Medical Oncology Director, Dr Ellis manages 80 medical oncologists and leads the UPMC Cancer Centers efforts in the task of medical protocol development and standardization of treatment. His initiatives led to the Clinical Pathways program, which was developed through disease specific, multidisciplinary committees, resulting in “best practice” standards for all common malignancies. UPMC Cancer Centers has received national acclaim for this program.

From 1997 until he left US Oncology in 2004, Dr. Ellis served as the National Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for US Oncology – the largest integrated oncology network in the country, providing an estimated 15% of all cancer care nationwide. As chair, he led efforts to unify physicians around the network to achieve common goals in the interest of patient care and fiscal responsibility. This was achieved primarily through initiatives to standardize aspects of patient care delivery throughout the country.

Dr. Ellis earned his BA at the University of Virginia and completed his M.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He performed his internal medicine training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Duke University.

Dr. Ellis is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of Oncology at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. He is chair of the St. Margaret Foundation and treasurer of the local private school board. Dr. Ellis is a member of the ASCO National Clinical Practice Committee. Dr. Ellis has numerous publications, board representations and charitable involvements.
